An agency is a company that matches professional babysitters with interested families. The degree to which agencies are involved in the process varies greatly from agency to agency. These will read over your application and, according to your family's needs, give you a list of potential babysitters on their roster that would work best. The rest of the work is in your hands. The most obvious downside of hiring an agency babysitter, of course, is the cost. Most agencies do very thorough background checks on all of their sitters and some even pay for childcare courses so that their sitters are the best in the business. This extensive research, however, does cost the parents. There are application fees, membership and processing fees, and placement fees. These costs are before you even pay the babysitter herself for her services!

Therefore deciding to hire an agency can be extremely expensive, but you know that these individuals are all thoroughly trained childcare assistants. If you are looking for a long-term or a live-in nanny, an agency is usually a good choice. If you need someone to watch you children on a Saturday night, it is better to find a sitter yourself and avoid all those fees!
