Protect Your Family Against Sex Offenders

Protecting one's family is a responsibility of any individual especially parents. There are several things from which people need to protect their family from. There are things which can be prevented easily and there are those which take a lot of time, effort and money. For example, choosing a vehicle with complete sets of seatbelts and airbags is one way to protect one's family and oneself from severe injury or even death in the unfortunate event of a vehicular accident.

Apart from car crashes and other threats to a person's family and self, there are other things that people need to look at. And one of them is the number of sexual offenders roaming around the country. Sure, a lot of sex offenders are behind bars but there are still a lot of them out there.

The Bureau of Justice Statistics' latest data on sex offenders is more than a decade old but it still give good insight on just how much people are susceptible to attacks of sex offenders. The scary thing about this is that the number of sex offenders in 1994 would have increased as population increases.

According to the Bureau of Justice statistics, on any given day in 1994, there are about 234,000 sex offenders convicted of their crimes. Furthermore, 60 percent of that number is just under conditional supervision in the community where they reside.

Statistics from 1994 also shows that the median age of the victims of these sexual predators is less than 13 years old. For parents and even single people, this reality hard to accept. But the fact of the matter is there are people who can and will take advantage of children for their perverted pleasure. Thus, parents should be extra careful with their children.

Today, state fairs' employees are subjected to background checks. This is to make sure that children who go to these state fairs will not be in close proximity to people who have committed and will commit sexual offense. The thinking that sex offenders will likely repeat their offense after being released from prison is backed by statistics.

The Bureau of Justice Statistics reported that out of the 9,691 male sex offenders released from prisons in 1994, 5.3 percent were arrested again for a new sex crime. What's scarier is that not all sex offenders are arrested due to the fact that some children are so much in fear that they would not admit that they were victimized by these twisted people.

Of that 5.3 percent, 40 percent committed the new crime within one year after release. So, if one wants to protect his or her family, a background check is strongly recommended for anyone they might hire to become a tutor, nanny, or any job which will have people working in close proximity to children.
