Protecting Your Gps Device

If you need to know where you are, where you're going, or how to get there, you mostly likely have GPS device. And most likely, it cost you a nice sum of money. To protect your investment and your invaluable tool, there are a few things you can do to keep your GPS in good condition and in use for many years.

One of the biggest enemies of a GPS device is temperature. During the summer and winter months, take your GPS with you when you exit the car. If this isn’t possible, then place it in the glove compartment. However, if you purchased a vehicle with a factory GPS, you needn’t worry. Automobile GPS devices that are preinstalled into the dashboard are specifically made to withstand extreme temperatures.

When using your GPS device outdoors, the GPS screen is at its most vulnerable. Constant exposure to bright sunlight will often dull the brightness of your screen. Invest in a screen protector, which will also protect the screen if accidentally dropped during a hike or bike ride.

Another sensitive component of your GPS device is the battery. If you’re using a car adapter, make sure it is unplugged when first starting your vehicle. Power surges like those from a car ignition can shorten the life of your battery and possibly damage the device.

Be sure to turn the power off whenever the device is not actually in use. When turned on, the GPS device is in constant contact with various satellites. Making the effort to switch it off can really extend the life of the device.
