Public Health Issues Related To Bed Bugs

Although Bed bugs were once a common health public health pest all over the world, their incidence has declined through the mid 20th century. Bed bugs are carriers of deadly diseases such as Malaria and Dengue, just like mosquitoes and hence one should not undermine their effect.

The common bed bug is found worldwide. Infestations are common in the developing world, occurring in settings of unsanitary living conditions and severe crowding. In North America and Western Europe, bed bug infestations became rare during the second half of the 20th century and have been viewed as a condition that occurs in travelers returning from developing countries. However, anecdotal reports suggest that bed bugs are increasingly common in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.

A bed bug bite appears as a small, itchy red bump and may form a line or cluster, revealing multiple bites from the same insect. Signs of an allergic reaction include larger bumps -about 20 cm wide -red, tender and small swollen sacs of pus or hive-like rashes. Bites generally disappear in a week or two and you can treat the itchiness with an ointment or cream. If you develop an allergic reaction, see your doctor, who may prescribe an antibiotic.

Now, the next question that comes to your mind is how to avoid infestation? Bed bugs are effective hitchhikers. Check your wooden items with bed bugs. Bed bugs like wooden items, cloth and paper. These are the material in which they create their habitat.

Public health concerns have set rules to be followed by hotels, apartments and other lodge services. It requires sanitary procedures. The suggested answer for such bed bug invasion is to have furniture's treated. It may be costly but like the case of termites, you will not regret it.

So prevent the breeding of bed bugs in your home or surroundings and keep yourself and your family safe!
