It would be hard to pinpoint the best feature of the latest packages satellite TV services are offering, but to just take a trip back five years in time would be very instructive. Just five years ago, trips to the video store wouldn’t be out of the question, borderline films would have to be seen in the theater and NFL Sunday Ticket was something you hoped your friends would get you for your next birthday. These day, post-revolution, we have already taken the big things for granted.
Nonetheless, the On-Demand services probably rank at the top. The simple fact of eliminating the hard copy (or videotape or DVD) makes satellite TV something special. You’re aren’t just getting the nostalgia pile, either. New releases will hit your HD TV set in and video store at the same time. But it’s not just films, either. Here are five must-see programs to check out On-Demand.
1. Gran Torino. You might want to ask Clint Eastwood to wash his mouth out with soap after watching this film. Clint takes his next-door neighbor to task after he catches the hapless kid bumbling around his garage in hopes of stealing a Ford Gran Torino. With an arsenal of weapons that would make small armies proud and a mouth trained in the trenches of Korea, Clint’s character is not messing around. Check out this gem as soon as you get the chance.
2. Appaloosa. What’s a couple of weeks at the movies without a good western? Ed Harris keeps the genre revival going with his second directorial effort, a western that’s got no shortage of rivalries and shootouts. With Jeremy Irons as a well-cast villain and Viggo Mortensen as the man who wants his head.
3. Californication. Whether you want to check out the newest episodes on Showtime or catch up on some you missed On-Demand, you can’t find a more potent mix of black comedy and dysfunctional family drama. David Duchovny has the Hank Moody character down and the scriptwriters are more than happy to oblige him on a weekly basis. Californication is a bona fide satellite TV hit.
4. Quantum of Solace. The new Bond scared everyone a little bit when he murdered someone with his bare hands early in the first installment of the Daniel Craig series. He didn’t take any anger management classes before Quantum, as he continues to play rough and risk everything for the good of his job. Some have criticized this Bond for being too cold, too automatic in his bloodthirsty animosity. I think action film fans would call that a compelling character.
5. Killshot. There’s Thomas Jane and the lovely Diane Lane, but it’s Mickey Rourke who again steals the show as the part-Native American hitman who teams up with a strange partner on the move. Rourke’s performance in The Wrestler was justly celebrated, but he shows in this film that he hasn’t lost his acting chops one bit.
See what a quiet night at home can mean with the lineup of HBO movies available with satellite services. When you‘ve got not time for trifling romances, Direct TV can pack a serious punch.
