Puppies Housebreaking - Unpleasant But Necessary

If you are going to get a puppy that you intend to live with in your home, you are certainly going to have to deal with the issue of housebreaking your puppy. Many people find this task unpleasant and sometimes cruel but it is a necessary process to change the behavior of a puppy.

Without a puppies housebreaking, he will urinate and defecate when and where he pleases. This is not a tolerable situation for anyone with any sense of cleanliness or decorum. You must begin the process of housebreaking puppies as soon as they come into your home environment.

The ideal age for puppies housebreaking is at seven weeks when they are weaned from their mother and can be brought into your home. At this age a puppy is eager to please and will respond better to the socialization process that you are putting them through than if you start at a later age.

Generally puppies that have been in the kennel for longer periods of time and make their grand entrance into your home at the 12-week age often are more difficult to train. By that age, they have usually picked up some behavioral habits that they will need to unlearn to live properly in your home.

Puppies at 12 weeks old in the kennel have been used to urinating and defecating wherever they please. They even play in their own waste tracking it around and at times eating their own feces. The process of puppies housebreaking must rid them of this learned behavior so that they can fit into a sanitary home environment.

It is not a cruel practice to housebreak a puppy as many people surmise. It doesn't cause lasting emotional trauma that leads to problems later in the dog's life. On the contrary, any form of behavior modification or socialization that allows the puppy to fit in naturally with the home environment, is better for the puppy and owner in the long run.
