When you bring a new puppy into your home you will have to go through the process to puppy potty train the little pup. Just like with a small child, a puppy needs encouragement and reward for doing the right job at the right time. You must know upfront that the pup will have accidents before he gets the behavior correctly on a consistent basis.
To puppy potty train your little pup you need to have some measure of patience and resolve. You must never beat your puppy for accidents that will occur at the beginning of the behavior modification period. Using love with a firm hand is the best way to train your puppy to urinate and defecate at a place you choose is appropriate.
Studies have shown it is easier to potty train your puppy as soon as you get the puppy into your home environment rather than wait till the puppy is a certain age. The longer the puppy has the "freedom" to urinate and defecate where ever and whenever he chooses the more difficult it is to unlearn that type of behavior.
Experienced dog owners will tell you that if they got an older puppy from the kennel, he was much more difficult to potty train because the "bad" behavior was more difficult to unlearn. In many overcrowded kennels puppies are not required to have the same housebroken behavior that is necessary to live in a real home environment.
The sad state of affairs in most kennels is that if a puppy is adopted rather than put to sleep, it is a lucky dog. Some of the more affluent and private kennels will try to house train puppies as they age in the kennel environment, but that is the exception rather than the rule.
