Qualities Of A Good Family Portrait

There is definitely a lot more to taking a family portrait than most people would think. Not only is the photographer concentrating on the functions of the camera, exposure settings and overall composition in order to flatter the family. but they must also be aware of the families facial and body expressions, having a coordinated look to the photo and having a good rapport with the family. This article will discuss some ways to achieve the best possible qualities to create a powerful family portrait.

Before having a family get organized for their portrait there are some things to consider, for instance where is the photo being taken? In the Families home, outside or in a studio? Choosing the perfect location that has meaning to the family will give the photo a nostalgic feeling for the people involved for many years to come. For example if the photo is to be taken inside the families home, look for a family heirloom such as a piece of furniture or painting on the wall that can be used as an accent piece in the photo.

Once the location has been chosen the next thing to consider is what the family is wearing. Is the families wardrobe coordinated? If the background has more dark tones have the family wear light colored clothing and be sure to have a separation light behind them to separate their hair from the background as well.

Every portrait photographer will tell you that the eyes are the most important thing when taking pictures of people. This is very true except that the character of the family photograph largely depends on the expressions and emotion being shown through body language. Not all family portraits have to be of the families faces (although you should always get lots of these) sometimes it is nice to mix it up and try compositions that show specific emotions.

The most important thing when working as a family portrait photographer is to have good rapport with the family. Talk to the family and ask them questions, make them feel comfortable and excited about working with you. The point to taking a family portrait is to flatter the subject which means that it is your job to make everyone in the photo look and feel their best!
