Quitting Smoking - Should It Really Be That Hard?

If you have been a smoker for a long time, like I was for 35 years, you will now have the mindset that to give up smoking you are going to have to go through some hard times. Apparently when our bodies have a dependency (addiction) to some type of substance, like nicotine for example this same body will go through all types of processes as it copes with first withdrawal and then resetting itself to do without the substance you have stopped taking.

If you have read any quit smoking literature (and again if you are like me you have done that a lot of times) it reinforces the idea that quitting smoking is hard, but that the process is something that you have to go through. The problems this literature tells you you will go through includes hacking coughs, lethargy, feeling ill and tired, being agitated or angry and even depression. When you read that sort of information is it any wonder that so many people go back to smoking again usually within the first month of quitting.

My "quit smoking' moment came when I was told I had early onset emphysemia (I was 46 at the time). My daughter had just delivered my first grandson and things were supposed to be going well for me. The doctor's verdict was a bit of a blow and made worse by the fact that I had already tried patches, gums, supplements, prescription medication and sheer will power to stop smoking in the past. I really did not know what I was going to do. But increasing my longevity so I would watch my grandchildren grow up became a priority for me but instead of just buying another program and trying my hardest to stick to it; instead I looked at all the quit smoking options there were available for me and started pulling out bits that I knew would work, and including other ideas that were not being tried in other quit smoking programs.

What I found out was that while "will power" won't work for a lot of people, having the right mindset for following through with your goal did work - for anybody. If you literally program your mind for success and move towards your goal instead of trying to run away from problems you are facing, you can achieve anything. What was even more powerful for me was that this "right" mindset could be used to cope with a lot of different problems we all face - wanting to lose weight, quitting smoking, lessening the stress in our lives, coping with problem children and more.

I became a non smoker within a hour of setting up four little steps that were easy to do and most importantly did not involve me putting any nicotine replacements in my system. I have now been smoke free for more than two years and as I enjoy my grandson's second birthday I am so glad that I took the time to find a solution to my smoking problems and found something that works.
