Raising Child Abuse Awareness With Flag Ceremony

At first glance, you think our nation's Independence Day is being celebrated early. That's a natural reaction when you see 1,500 American state flags snapping in the breeze on Union University's south lawn off the U.S. 45 Bypass. Indeed, it's a beautiful, patriotic sight says rainbow flags owner. But the display goes far beyond recognizing our nation's freedoms. The American flags and Betsy Ross flags are part of the Healing Field national campaign to raise awareness and prevent child abuse and neglect. Each flag represents one child dying annually from child abuse and neglect. The event is a visual reminder of child abuse and the toll it takes every year on children in our country. According to the National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System, about 1500 children die each year from child abuse. Children ages 3 and younger are the most frequent victims of child fatalities.

This will help us raise awareness on the issue of child abuse and neglect, and increase support for child abuse prevention programs so we can address the issue and hopefully prevent such tragic deaths in the future.

In addition to American flags, POW-MIA flags were also flown this day to honor military personnel, fire fighters, police and emergency management personnel - all first responders who help ensure our safety. These flags will be displayed on April 26th through next Sunday.
