Reactive depression is a type of condition that is caused by the loss of a loved one or by the loss of something that you dearly love. This condition is also referred to as adjustment disorder with various mood swings. It can result after for example the death of a close relative or a close friend. Sometimes, it can be triggered when you lose your job. This disorder can be easily cured because it is not as severe as other conditions.
The signs and symptoms of this condition are the same as other types. They include irritation, sleeping problems as well as social withdrawal. Others are feeling sad and having a poor appetite. This illness can last for about six months although sometimes it can take longer. How fast you overcome reactive depression depends on how early you come to terms with the situation.
The way to go about this condition is to try and keep yourself busy or engaged. Trying to stay active and going about your daily responsibilities can help in dealing with this condition. You have to be however careful not to push yourself too hard because this can only worsen the situation. You should avoid scenarios that make you idle.
When you are idle, you create room for thoughts about the loss and this will make you more depressed.
Cognitive or behavioral therapy and interpersonal therapy can effectively help in dealing with agitated states of reactive depression. Antidepressants may not be effective in dealing with this disorder.
