This summer, 20 million Brits chose to holiday at home and tried to enjoy a good old British summer. Now, 68% of them are planning an overseas trip because Blighty did not really satisfy their thirst for sun.
Due to the recession and the promise of sun, UK travel companies were pushing the 'staycation' idea as a real alternative to a week on the Med. But the sun never really came, and so last minute holidays are back on the agenda.
Because money has been somewhat less forthcoming for most of us than usual, we have delayed booking our holidays until we were sure cash was actually in the bank and not just on the credit card.
This lack of money and increase in last minute bookings has meant that cheap and cheerful package deals are popular once again. All we want is a break away from the doom and gloom of the office, so whether we are in St Tropez or Playa de las Americas, the fact that we are not stuck behind a desk for nine ours a day is more than enough.
Cut backs need to be made in every aspect of the trip, including getting to and from the airport. If you don't book way in advance, which isn't possible for last minute holidays, airport parking rates can be ?30 a day.
Another option is the train. But this can also be expensive and luggage space is at a premium. If you have ever tried lugging your luggage around a packed train then you know better than to know better than to use this mode of transport to get to the airport, especially from within London.
Another very viable option is the bus. We are not talking regular London buses here which we all know are unreliable, busy and with the same lack of luggage space problem as trains.
Instead we are talking about a modern, air-conditioned coach. EasyBus offers airport transfers from all over London to Gatwick, Luton and Stansted from as little as ?2 each way. Okay so this tiny price means you have to book around a week in advance but even if you book a couple of days before you travel the cost is only around ?6 each way and it picks you up from a convenient pick-up point and deals with your luggage for you. What could be more simple? So you can make your last minute holiday cheap, cheerful and easy as soon as you walk out the front door.
