Reducing Stress When Moving Home

Moving a household can be a stressful experience. A bit of planning ahead can decrease the chances of problems arising, ensuring a smoother transition. Prepare for the move in advance, as scurrying on moving day will likely cause things to be lost or broken.

A plan for unpacking will help complete the move with the least amount of effort. One of the biggest problems people encounter when moving house is misplaced belongings. The two easiest ways to prevent this from happening are to label everything, and keep things grouped together based on what room the items will be moved into. Start packing rooms that are rarely used a few weeks before its time to move. Place items in boxes, and label them neatly with information including what is in the box, and what room it should go into. Remember to label on two sides of the box so that it can be found quickly among other boxes.

Don't over-pack; keep boxes reasonably light as you may be carrying many back and forth. Prevent breakage by packing items carefully. Wrap fragile items in packing material. Newspaper, bubble wrap and other packing materials are available, but also take advantage of items that will have to be moved anyway. Make use of clothing, rugs, bedding, stuffed animals and towels. Placed between fragile items they provide extra padding and protection. Valuable items should be insured before a move. Immediately before the move do a walkthrough of the residence. Don't forget to look on top of high shelves installed in closets, floor vents, and under the sinks.

This is also the time to pack any perishable food that may be transported into a cooler. A final cleaning to remove dust and smudges will ensure that renters get a high return on their deposit, or will leave the house nicer for new owners. If the moving truck is packed with least used items going in first, then upon arrival to the new site the most important items are the easiest to access.

Move things into the appropriate room, and determine what rooms should be unpacked first, usually kitchens and bedrooms. Some items, such as plates packed in newsprint, may need to be washed before they are put away. While there may be many changes in layouts after the move is complete, determine how things are going to be used, and place them in an area where they are easily accessible.
