Relaxing Sunday Morning

Waking up on your own accord, not woken by the alarm clock, isn’t that wonderful. Look out the window, the sun shining, birds calling from the trees. You stretch and yawn, snuggle down to a last few minutes of sleep.

Sunday mornings can be so peaceful and relaxing. As you wake up again, you feel rested and fresh. First things first, of course and off you go to put on the kettle. Today you will settle for a cup of instant coffee, but not the usual instant coffee, that special brew you bought last time you went shopping. That instant coffee you save for special occasions and visitors. It smells and tastes as close to the real Macoy any time. As the kettle boils, you put out your special cup and a plate for some toast. You look into the fridge to decide if you are going to be bold and daring and have some marmalade on the toast, or if you are going to have some anchovy spread. You spoon some instant coffee granules into your cup, and as the kettle starts to whistle, you pop some sliced bread into the toaster. You pour boiling water onto the coffee granules and immediately your nostrils are filled with the smell of delicious coffee. As the toast pops up, you spread some marmalade on the one slice and some anchovy spread on the other slice. You take your breakfast to the balcony, and savor the beautiful summer’s Sunday morning. Traffic is slow, so you hear the birds in the trees. You see a paper boy delivering the Sunday paper to the neighbors and you wonder when last you actually read a Sunday newspaper?

Finishing your breakfast in peace on a Sunday morning is something to treasure, as the rest of the week it is a mad rush to go to work, get the kids to school and seeing your husband off to work. You take your cup and empty plate to the kitchen, rinsing it with water, it will get washed with the rest of the dishes, after everyone else has gotten up and had their breakfasts. Sunday mornings, each one fends for themselves. If you want cereal, you fix it yourself, if you want eggs, you cook them yourselves, the only thing we do together on a Sunday morning, is to do the dishes together. One washes, one dries, one puts the stuff away, all the while chatting about what went on during the week and catching up with one another’s news and achievements.

The rest of the house is still quiet, and you take your morning shower quickly, thinking that you have time to get ready for church, and perhaps you will even be back before the rest of the house has woken up. Sunday mornings everyone take it easy. You dry yourself while looking at the closet, deciding what to wear to church. You make your choice, and you get dressed. Your hair needs only a little smoothing and your face some light make up, and you’re ready to leave quietly. Before you leave, you dab some of your favorite fragrance on your wrists and behind your ears. You put the perfume away carefully.

You are ready to go to church. As you open the door, you hear the church bells ring and you know, it is going to be a peaceful and relaxing Sunday morning.
