Reorganizing My Life - The First Step: Prioritizing My Time

Knowing that if I keep doing the same things, the results will be the same, I choose to do new things and get the results I desire. The first step to reorganize my life is to prioritize my time. Drs Ellie and Charley Drake, entrepreneurs, who have mentored many successful business owners around the world, reminded me of the analogy of filling the empty jar. Each day is like an empty jar that God has given me to fill with all the necessary activities of my life, represented by the sand, pebbles, stones and rocks that all need to fit into the jar. If I place the sand in first there will be no room for the rocks, stones and pebbles. I must begin with the rocks.

Three, maybe four, big rocks have to go in the jar every morning: my time with God, my marriage, my ministry and my business. Everything else is stones, pebbles and sand that will fit in when the rocks are firmly in place. Every rock is part of my assignment to be an example of living life more abundantly. The stones of my learning, teaching and writing are part of the rock of my time with God.

I suddenly realized, there is really only one rock to place in the jar each day. My time with God is the rock where I come into His presence, learn who I am and receive my assignment, which fulfills the calling of God to live my life to give God all the glory, and to complete my assignment to fulfill His purpose through me. This rock births the other three large rocks: my marriage, ministry and business. They are nothing without my number one Rock of my life.

The rock of my marriage has three stones: my husband’s needs; my needs, and the needs of our home. The rock of my ministry has three stones: learning, teaching and writing. And the rock of my business has three stones: marketing, contacting and training.

Each of the stones represents a responsibility related to one of the three rocks and the pebbles are the tasks to fulfill the stones’ responsibilities. Each grain of sand is a specific action I must complete at a precise moment of time. All of the sand must come in line with the purpose of the pebbles, stones and three rocks, which is the one purpose God has created me to fulfill.

Most of my sand in the past has been little unnecessary things that only waste time and leave no time for the important things I need to accomplish. My goal now is that every grain of sand, every moment of my day, every thought, word and action will be good work that fulfills my assignment, manifests the promises of God, and is on purpose. How wonderful when every rock is in place, when every stone relates to one of the rocks, every pebble is a necessary task for one of the stones, and all the sand is part of the pebbles. Then I will be living a truly purpose driven life, fulfilling God’s purpose through His assignment for me. In this way the rocks, stones, pebbles and sand of my life will glorify God. I will truly be living, walking and working in God’s will and way.

How will you fill your jar today? My prayer for you and me is that:

We will walk in the middle of God’s perfect will;
Hearing His voice say peace be still;
Saying and doing all to fulfill
God’s purpose in our lives today.
