But let's face the fact. All of us want to cut cost. And retirement party can be expensive.


If you're in charge of a retirement party planning and you only have a shoe-string budget to work on, don't panic. I'll show you how to go round doing it and still get in tops everything for the party.

1. Know Your Budget

You must know how much money you've for the party. This is the basic because if you don't know your budget, how are you going to spend within the budget?

Detailed down all expected costs and expenses.

2. Evaluate Your Costs and Expenses and Do Price Comparisons

Remove unnecessary expenses, meaning those expenses that you can do away with by, say, replacing them with sponsorship/contributions from friends, colleagues or companies.

Comparing prices and costs by shopping around on the Internet and also visiting local stores, warehouses and departmental stores. Go for good bargains to save money.

3. Slice off the "Extras'

You'd be surprised there're lots of hidden "extras" which you can hone down like extensive decorations; expensive tablewares; a luncheon instead of a dinner party; casual and informal gathering instead of a black tie affair; trimming down the number of guests; self-cooked food.......

4. Keep It Simple

It's of course nice to go all out to throw a lavish party in honor of the retiree but you've got a slim budget. So, it's still fine to gather round just a few colleagues and friends of the retiree and have a simple and yet meaningful celebration with cakes, cookies and light refreshments.

5. Don't Have to Stinge on Food, Just Find Cheaper, Better Way to Cater For It

If the party is in a home or at a restaurant, buffet style is the easiest and a cheaper way to serve food.

If you're catering the meal, a buffet is normally less expensive than a formal sit-down affair.

For at-home dos, serve food you can prepare at home, e.g. prepared meats, salads, cold dishes, fruits, cookies and biscuits etc. It's definitely a cheaper way too....

6. Gift - Inexpensive but Memorable

Ask every guest to chip in a certain amount of money for one memorable present for the retiree. Should be something identifying with the retiree's going forward new milestones in life like books, golf clubs, travel certificates, luggage.....
