Hardy was born in Upper Bockhampton village near Dorchester town in 1840. His father was an architect and his mother was born in a landlord family. So we can say he was born in a noble family before. In 1865, Hardy published How I Built Myself a House. He wanted to be a poet. He desponded of theology, so he dropped on the social rules, becoming a thinker for freedom. His most successful article was Far From the Madding Crowd, besides there were other works such as Wessex Poems, Jude the Obscure, Return of the Native, Mayor of Castebridge, The Woodlamders, Wessex Tales and so on. Hardy liked pastoral life, but bourgeois relation’s invading destroys the health and happiness in countryside. So he just expressed his feeling of pity in most of his works. He insisted that people should close to nature in order to find happiness easier. Tess Durbeyfield, she was a clever, beautiful, naïve and nice girl living in countryside. But she had a lazy father having the habit of drinking, who was a peddler. There were so many children in her family that they led a poor life. And Tess was the first daughter. One day he was told that he was a descendant of the D’urberville nobleman family. In another village, there was a rich family the D’urberville. Father was a merchant, who had died long before. In fact, the family name didn’t come by nature. After making a fortune, he looked for many old books to find out suitable cognomen in order to run up his identity. Eventually, he chose this one and he moved from north to south. With the drive of her parents, Tess went to the D’urberville to make them be known to their family, but in a vain. However, Tess looked after a little poultry farm which is Mrs. D’urberville’s hobby for reducing the load of economic trouble. Tess’s parents thought Mrs. D’urberville would recognize them because of the influence of vanity. To their surprise, the son Alec D’urberville raped fifteen-year-old Tess. Tess went back home with anger. She had a baby, but before long the baby died. Not having the courage to live in the village, she left hometown to a big farm to milk to earn for living. Angel, Chare, a clergyman son from another village, was practicing agricultural working, planning to manage his own farm. After they met, they fell in love with each other. But there was also something agonized in Tess’s heart. She thought she was no longer a pure woman and had no rights to love Angel. So she tried to tell the unknown fact to Angel, but failed. Only in bridal night, in order not to arouse Angel’s anger and disdain she made a confession. When he heard that he dumped Tess reasonably to Brazil although he had had the same behavior before. Men are always easy to get forgive. Women are always easy to be hurt. It’s unfair. People gave birth to many girls in order to have only one boy to keep the family name going. They thought girls had no use for the family. Nowadays women’s situations have become much better. Some are because of the change of society and some are because of civilization.
