Ride Safe, Reach Safe - The Bike Helmet

No doubt, that using a bike helmet is a step towards a safe journey but at the same time, its ability to prevent or reduce a chance of a head injury is still a debatable issue.

Another intense debatable issue is the compulsion of using helmets. UCI – The Union Cycliste Internationale made it mandatory to us e a bicycle helmet which was followed by huge opposition in 1991, after which the idea was discarded. The opposition consists of riders from all around the world supporting their argument against the compulsion of helmets. According to them, using helmets affect their performance in the race as they are carrying addition weight on their head. Moreover the designs, especially in the 1970s, didn’t provide enough ventilation to keep the heads cool
Before Buying a Helmet

The basic feature that you should always look while buying a bicycle helmet, if you are an intense rider, is the weight and the ventilation mechanism of the helmet because your head temperature should be regulated while you are having an intense ride. Moreover, you should also check the safety level it provides you. It should be able to prevent you from serious head injuries in case of a fall from the bicycle. If you are not an intense rider, then even a slightly heavier and much more protective helmet will do the job.

Another successful design of a bike helmet is believed to be Bell Biker that was introduced in 1975. The main problem of these helmets was their little pro vision of ventilation. The Snell B85 is considered to be the first standard bike helmet; introduced in 1985. In 1990s, large and hard shell helmets started disappearing after the introduction of thin shell helmets.
