Just a little while ago, the Rome Reborn project stole the lime light, which a few of you will already have seen on Google Earth, the popular software used to view earth in 3D. For the few who don't know, this is the site for downloading it : earth.google.com. It has got a has played a massive part in Rome and continues to do so until today.
What is Rome Reborn? It is an global project, whose aim is to recreate in 3D on Google's platform, the ancient Rome, from the early settlements of the late Bronze Age ( one thousand BC ) to the'de-population' of the first cities in the Middle Ages ( 550 AD ).
The project was developed by advanced Technologies at the college of Virginia, in collusion with some varsities in France.
The reconstruction in the digital world reflects our existing knowledge about Rome. They picked up data on specific archaeological sites and some quantitative info on the distribution of buildings across the different 14 regions of the town. The sources come from first case studies and archaeological excavations, coins, inscriptions, literary sources, as well as regional catalogues dating to 4th century AD.
The digital model is composed of 2 kinds of material : 1.detailed models of buildings, reconstructed on the principle of reliable archaeological evidence ( the church of Venus, the Roman Forum and of Julius Caesar, for example. .. ) and 2.buildings that should be widespread in the region.
for the moment,'Rome Reborn' includes 32 of the 200 buildings that it was possible to reconstruct with detailed studies ( those belonging to the first class ). These have been reconstructed in great detail while other buildings, reconstructed on the study of the area, lack interior decor, and statues, for example.
Reading certainly doesn't give an idea of what the researchers from Virginia have succeeded in doing. The end result is just incredible. The display can be done in three different versions to fit a PC with different capabilities of calculation. If you've got a reasonably potent PC ( we recommend at least 3gb of RAM ) to test the full version and higher resolution, you'll be amazed. The reconstruction is absolutely amazing and is capable of projecting a 3D world, that gives the concept of traditional Rome that is maybe the most visually complete that man has ever had.
obviously, the 3D world is nice to get a general idea of ancient Rome, but seeing the Colosseum on a screen, as perfect as it can be, and seeing it from a live standpoint, has a different effect. To see what truly remains of what was the largest empire in traditional times, then do not hesitateto go and visit the amazing city.
