Although the start of golf is related with Scotland, historical scholars have said early versions of golf are reported in history as far back as the Roman Empire. Golf also was seen in vast other places, such as the Holand. From its beginnings, golf was a sport with formal clothing - no jersey wholesalers necessary for this increasing sport.
The 1st golf club in the world was organized in Scotland – the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, in 1744. The club set down the first set of laws of the game. About 10 years after that, the Royal and Ancient Golf Club in St. Andrews turned the authorised administering agency for the golf. Though there are accounts of golf near this time in the American colonies, the 1st golf club in North America actually was erected in Canada in Montreal in 1873. Golf clubs opened in the following years in America and the United States Golf Association was soon formed. The USGA and the Royal and Ancient are now the frist-rank ruling bodies in the world of golf.
GOLF RULES
From its initial days, golf has been a game apart from many others. There is no physical touch involved, and courtesy and propriety are two of the most fundamental essentials of golf. Until the 1940s, golf athlete wore shirts and ties, a hellish scenario for the jersey wholesalers who are so involved in many of today's sports.
Golf is played on a course that generally includes eighteen holes with groups of between two and four athletes. The regulations of golfing stipulate that golf athletes can bring with them no more than 14 clubs. Today's regulations also set out what sort of technology is permitted in golf clubs. The golf holes extend in distance from about one hundred and thirty yards to over six hundred yards. Each hole is assigned a large number of strokes that means "par", or the average acceptable score on that hole. The number of strokes varies for 3 to 5. The aim of golf is for golfers to shoot the ball from the tee to the green, and then into the hole, in the lowest total strokes. Many courses have par totals for the round between 70 and 72. A golf athlete who bests par on a hole by one stroke records a "birdie"; while scoring 2 strokes under par on a hole is called an "eagle" and is infrequent. A athlete who hits the tee shot into the hole on a Par 3 hole makes an eagle that is called a "hole-in-one".
A stroke-play match is won by the athlete with the lowest number of strokes for the 18-holes. Professional golf tournaments generally span over 4 days. In match play golf, a golf athlete plays heads-up against his or her rival. The athlete who scores lowest on the most holes is confirmed the winner of the match. If the score is even after eighteen holes, the match goes on until the first golf athlete wins a hole.
Golf, once named the gentlemen's competition, retains much of the flavor of its beginning years. Players no longer wear ties, but the clothing worn is more formal and regulations rely on golf players penalizing themselves.
