Seo That My Nan Could Do – Part 1

Those of you that know absolutely nothing about SEO and want to learn... Welcome to the first of a series of articles intended to get you up to speed with some simple SEO techniques that I reckon my nan could follow if she applied herself.

So why my nan? Well she has just pushed past 80 and is bright as a button, she has no pre-knowledge of the internet and how it works, but could easily learn some basic stuff if she wanted to.

What is Google trying to achieve?
Just spend a minute or so with a pen and paper and write down 5 things that you think Google wants to achieve. No really imagine that you were in charge of deciding who took the number 1 spot for your industry, how would you go about making that decision!
Okay there are no right and wrong answers for this exercise, all I wanted to do is get you thinking for yourself about what is a good search result. Now out of your list try and pick out what you think are the two most important things, and I would guess that they are related to or involve 'quality' and 'relevance'.

What is Google?
So now we have a bare bones understanding of what Google wants lets understand the beast itself a bit better. It is a search engine, but what does that actually mean? Well you type in a search phrase and Google displays a list of links to websites in order of their relevance and quality matching your search phrase. Now the next step is to understand that these search results are generated automatically by a program that is written by a human being. Meaning that somebody somewhere has decide which things about a website determines relevance and quality.

Homework!
Do some Google searches for subjects that interest you, and try to see what makes the websites that rank highly for your searches relevant.
