If you are the sort of person who is always getting lost but doesn’t want to fork out hundreds of pounds on a Sat Nav there is a cheaper alternative that has recently been released on the iPhone.
TomTom, one of the major satellite navigation companies, has recently developed an application that can be used on any iPhone and can be used by any car drivers to plan routes and provide directions or alternative routes when stuck in traffic.
The application for the iPhone has many features that are found on the standard Sat Navs but is available for a much cheaper price. The application can be downloaded from the iTunes store and is compatible with both the iPhone 3G and the iPhone 3GS. The current price for the UK version is around £60 and the European version is around £70.
The application utilises the iPhone's already inbuilt GPS to pinpoint where the vehicle is, and then it uses IQ Routes to calculate the best roads to take based on data from other road users in the area. The application is also able to provide users with location-specific information, such as flagging up the nearest garages, cash points and speed cameras.
TomTom have recently started to sell a mount for the iPhone that sits on the car dashboard so that you are able to see the route maps more clearly and also allows you to make hands-free calls when driving. The dock also allows the user to play songs stored on their iPhone through the car's stereo.
