Save Money While Going Green

Growing your own food is not only a safer way to enjoy fresh vegetable because you know exactly what goes into their production. Creating a garden is also a way to save money at the grocery store.

Eating healthy is not cheap. When the prices at the market rise, then most people turn to processed foods to make the grocery budget balance. Your own fresh garden vegetables can help take the sting out of the grocery budget and can save you hundreds of dollars each year.

1. Start small. The new craze is the square foot garden which helps you grow an amazing amount of produce in just a four foot by four foot space. The square foot garden is easy to plant, easy to weed and easy to water - saving you time, effort and utilities expenses.

2. Grow what you will eat. Zucchini and squash may be garden staples, but they are a waste of space if you don’t eat them. Forget all that the books and guides suggest and grow the goods that you enjoy and will actually eat.

3. Keep it simple, especially as you are starting out. Limit your variety and your amount so that you will have success and be more likely to carry on with future gardening projects.

4. Read the directions and keep a record. Many people just clear out a spot and scatter some seeds. Read the instructions on the package. Make notes of when you plant and the date that the vegetable should be mature. Doing this will help you know when you can plant your next crop in the same space (preferably of a different vegetable).

Growing your own vegetables will help you save money while you continue to each healthy. You can grow the items that you enjoy the most and it will only cost you pennies a veggie.
