Heavy cardboard is used in many different things in our world. Flat cardboard is the material that is used to create cereal boxes and many other types of packaging for various foods. Flat cardboard also is used to create shoeboxes. This is a heavily used material, yet many people do not even think twice about throwing it out. There is also a type of cardboard called corrugated cardboard, which is very often utilized in packing boxes, as it is two pieces of cardboard with a ruffled-looking layer in between. This serves to insulate items packed inside of a box easily. If you have any of these types of cardboard in your home, instead of throwing them away, you can dispose of them in an eco-friendly way by recycling them.

Cardboard recycling programs do not exist at every single recycling center, but in pretty much every city and town there are places that will take your old cardboard and recycle it. Cardboard is made from paper fiber, which is developed from wood pulp, or trees. You can save many trees with cardboard recycling and can also save a lot of energy as well. For a tree farm to run, energy and water are used to keep the trees healthy. Even more electricity and valuable energy is used to cut down the trees. Chainsaws and high powered machinery emit harmful gases into the atmosphere which leads to even more air pollution and the depletion of the ozone layer. The trees must then be transported, causing even more detrimental pollution. By simply taking your cardboard items to a recycling center, you can help to cut down on massive amounts of energy use and pollution in our vital atmosphere.

Cardboard recycling also helps to save a lot of water, because already manufactured cardboard requires more than 50 percent less water to repurpose than it takes to turn raw materials into cardboard. Cardboard that is thrown in the trash also takes up important space in landfills, contributing to the growing amount of solid waste on our Earth.

You can easily do your part by taking your cardboard recycling items to a nearby facility that has the equipment to process cardboard and reuse it for other items. The grocery store that you frequent may even have a large bin in the parking lot where you can place your items that you wish to recycle. You may also have a recycling company that can come to your home for curbside pickup. Do a little research around your area to find a good place to recycle your cardboard and other trash.
