Saving Money On Your Home Redesign
Schedule it during the off season. At certain times of the year, contractors are very busy—and at other times, they may not have much other work coming in. At low-volume times of the year, you may be able to negotiate a better rate from contractors. Compare materials as well as price. Choosing the lowest-priced contractor might save you money up front, but avoiding future repairs due to shoddy work or low-quality materials will save you much more in the future. Do simple tasks yourself. Depending on your expertise, consider handling light disassembly work—taking down existing cabinets and fixtures—or painting, installing new shelving or cabinetry, and other small projects yourself. Buy your supplies yourself. In some cases, your contractor may let you buy the supplies yourself. This gives you greater control over the quality of materials—and helps to ensure you’re charged only for the supplies that are used. Finance at a low rate. Many homeowners finance home redesign projects with a home equity loan or home equity line of credit. Negotiate with your bank for the best interest rate on a loan. Deliver your own materials. If you have your building materials delivered, you’ll pay for it—sometimes by hundreds of pounds. Plan ahead. Well before you’ve chosen a contractor, go to building supply stores and get a sense for which materials you want and how much they cost. Home redesign projects almost always cost more than homeowners expect. But yours doesn’t have to. With a little planning and willingness to handle some tasks yourself, the amount of money you save can make the extra work worth it.
