Saving Your Pool's Plaster Life Span

Your swimming pool’s plaster is the most expensive part of a swimming pool. For your basic white plaster pool, the pool plaster should last up to 12 years if it is properly treated. If your pool has a different type plaster (Quartz or Pebble), the lifespan can reach up to 15 years.

Although you generally never hear about it, adding Calcium to your pool is a must. Most people understand that a pool must have chlorine in it and a chemical agent (generally acid or soda ash) to keep the Ph at the proper levels, but few realize that adding calcium will help in keeping the life of the plaster of the pool. A normal range for your Calcium count should be 200-400 ppm (parts per million).

What most people tend to forget about pools is they are around for 12 months a year. Sure, you may only use it for 4-5 months out of the year, but if you forget about it for the other months, you are wasting money. If a pool is not properly treated during the winter months, it is losing life, and you are losing money. If calcium levels are not checked and adjusted during the fall, winter, and spring, your plaster life is in for an early death.

A pool that is ignored during these non-summer months can lose its plaster life in HALF the time. That’s right, the most expensive expense of a pool may have to be replaced in 6 years.

Work with your pool maintenance or pool management team (www.usapools.com) during the off-season to insure that your pool is being treated properly. Adding in calcium will certainly assist the life of your plaster, and mixing some chlorine around the pool will keep it clear. Keeping the pool clear during the offseason will save you in the cost of an acid wash at the beginning of the year (which will also help save your plaster’s life).
