Bai Feng Wan formula, also called White Phenix Pills, is one of the most renowned Chinese remedies for all womans menstrual disorders, including dysmennorrhea, amenorrhea, menorrhagia, scanty menstruation, and premenstrual syndrome (PMS).
It is based on a blend of two of Chinas most ancient blood and energy tonics: Four Item Decoction (Seh Wu Tang), which tonifies blood, and Four Gentlemen Decoction (Seh Wu Tang), which tonifies energy. Combined to form Eight Precious Decoction by Dr. Sha Tu-mu during the fourteenth century, it was further refined during the seventeenth century by Dr. Chang Chieh-pin, who added Leonurus to enhance the formulas gynecological properties.
This medicine is indicated for menstrual disorders due to liver, blood, and energy deficiencies, including irregular, insufficient, absent, and excessive menstruation, with related symptom of abdominal pain, cold and aching lumbar and knees regions, discomfort in waist and lower back, fatigue and lack of strength, pale dry complexion, vaginal discharges, and premenstrual syndrome (PMS).
This formula has Chinese Angelica herb (Angelica Sinensis). Chinese Angelica makes an ideal tonic for women with heavy, painful periods who risk becoming anaemic, as it helps regulate blood flow and uterine contractions. As an uterine tonic, the herb can help female fertility. It can also prevent general weakness after childbirth. It is also known to be beneficial for habitual miscarriage and postpartum recovery, and general deficiencies of liver and blood.
As a remark, prior to or during menstruation, women should avoid spicy food, raw and cold food, all processed junk food and all diary products. Raw food and cold food chill the female reproductive organs, causing blood stagnation. They should also avoid exposure to cold and damp energies such as wind, rain or swimming, as well as activity or situation that causes fatigue or stress, all of which further aggravate blood and energy deficiencies.
