Scale Data Collection

It is often just as important to keep a record of a weight measurement as it is to do the measurement in the first place. Industrial scales are used to obtain precise weight data. A bench scale may measure the amount of material being automatically filled into a container. This operation may continue for many hours. At the end of that time, it may be important to be able to see how many packages were filled, and the exact, filled weight of each and every package.

A water treatment facility needs to apply chemicals to the water at a particular rate. The drum of chemicals can be placed on a platform scale, and then pumped out as needed. It is desirable to be able to keep a record of both the time and amount of chemical that has been dispensed.

Floor scales may be used to weigh items being loaded onto a truck. It is important to know the weight of each item. But it is also important to be able to review the entire truckload, and obtain a total weight.

Some industrial scales, such as those offered by Arlyn Scales, provide an optional USB (Universal Serial Bus) data collection feature. A standard USB flash memory stick can be plugged into the included USB port. The digital scale can then record any or all data that is shown on the screen. Depending on the size of the USB memory stick, tens of thousands of data points may be recorded. Whenever necessary, the stick may be removed from the scale and plugged into any standard computer. The data may then be downloaded into a spreadsheet or database table. This data may then be analyzed using standard charts and graphs. Or a simple database program can be used to present the data in any desired format. Data sticks from any number of scales can be loaded into the same computer. This allows comparisons of weighing data from each one.
