Scary Vampires Vs Sexy Vampires
And, of course, there is always the vampire with a heart of gold who doesn't want to succumb to the vices of his damned race of immortal predators. So why this gap in the mythology? Why does this creature of legend appear to us so vastly different from movie to movie? It comes down to culture. In the dark ages, humans invented scary things that dwell in the dark forests to justify our fear of the unknown. Clearly there must be something out there, born of the devil himself, that had more power than us and could come for us at any moment! This is the origin of the horror genre in general. As beings of evolution, we've got a natural "fight or flight" reflex in our gut that tells us about danger. But in the modern world when so many dangers have been overcome by technology, we must project our fears into a much more elaborate and fanciful realm. Thus the immortal, powerful vampire. One of the few remaining "predators" preying on humanity. But later, the trend in popular culture turned to embracing these fears and dissecting them to understand ourselves a bit more. Need we be afraid of what lurks in the dark when we have spotlights to turn on and automatic weapons? Surely not! The great Beasts that once terrorized our tribal villages are now curiosities in the local zoo. But Fear has not gone away, hasn't been fully conquered. And so our fears are manifest in supernatural predators. But the modern era has begun to romanticize even those fanciful fears in light or overcoming the emotion entirely. The bloody fangs of the night-hunters are now turning into sexy, smoldering forbidden pleasures. Who knew? We're getting over our fear of the dark in many ways and we're doing it by turning it into something we can crave, something that we can lust for. Hey, at least we're moving up the ladder, right?
