Scifi Movies Worst Characters

Exhibit A: Ruby Rhod from the Fifth Element.
When The Fifth Element came out back in 1997 it was stunning. It had a crazy mix of a story which included a perfect being, special stones, a black evil presence coming to earth and some far out characters. Bruce Willis was in the main role and it was all going great until about a third of the way in when Ruby Rhod played by Chris Tucker turned up. This guy very quickly made me forget that I was enjoying an up to that point great movie. What was it about Ruby Rhod that grated? Everything. He shouted or screamed the whole time in a very high pitched voice. The film was still good but not as great as it could have been sans Tucker.

Exhibit B: Revenge of the Fallen: Leo Spitz
In the Transformers sequel Leo turns up as a fairly interesting room mate for Sam Witwicky. He's a conspiracy nut with a thing for the ladies and talks at a mile a minute. That bit is fine with me. Its when the action starts that Leo gets incredibly annoying. The more action that comes along the more he shouts, screams and babbles nonsense much like the aforementioned Mr Rhod.

Exhibit C: Niobe from the Matrix Reloaded
By about ten minutes into the Matrix Reloaded I was left wondering why the all powerful Neo was still engaging in boring fist fights with agents. That was to be the least of my concerns by the end of the trilogy. Niobe played by Jada Pinkett Smith is a character we've seen a hundred times before. She's cocky, resourceful, not particularly pleasant and has a knack for pulling off the impossible. So a situation will present itself as impossible, all of the cast will talk about how impossible it is and then Niobe will reassure everyone that while it is impossible she can totally do it because she used to bullseye wamp rats in her T-16 back home. Niobe is a lazily written character who always comes out on top and while she may have been slightly intriguing twenty years ago we've seen her too many times before.

Exhibit D: Jean Grey from X-Men the last stand
In the climax to the X-Men trilogy Jean Grey comes back from the dead as the Phoenix. If you don't know your comics lore the Phoenix is an eternal force that can destroy galaxies. One not to be trifled with. In the last stand she gets off to a promising start by killing Cyclops then Professor X. So surely an unbelievable amount of destruction is about to befall the good people of the x-universe? You would think so wouldn't you. No, Jean decides that for the rest of the movie she will hang out with an arch enemy Magneto while he goes about his evil business. And that's no exaggeration. She just stands behind Magneto doing nothing for the whole of the second half of the film. Only at the end does she decide to cause a little bit of havoc. So I'll try and put that in context for you. Imagine in the movie The Dark Knight if Batman had his old mate Superman come to Gotham and get involved in catching the Joker. Instead of actually do anything useful the hugely powerful Superman would just stand behind bats most of the time keeping an eye on developments. It wouldn't happen would it?
