Scrapbook Page Planning: Getting Organized

The first thing I do to plan my scrapbook pages, is put my pictures in order. I don't get to fussy with how many photos I am going to be using on each page, yet. There three different things I use to do this:

1. I like using expandable folders, you usually have 12 or 13 pockets and this way if you have ideas about how many photos you want on a page you can get a head start. Depending on how many photos you have to scrapbook, or pages you have this may be the best choice for you. Something I personally like about this option is you can also add the photo mats and other embellishments you would like to use on each page. So it can double as your photo organizer and page planner. The con to this option is that you can't see your page at a glance, you would have to get the photo and everything else out to see your page plans.

2. The second idea is using a photo box to organize your photos. With this you can put your photos in order and stand them in your photo box. With this idea you can also split up your photos and start your planning process. The photo box can also be used to plan your pages, but you can only use so big of pieces, and embellishments. If they are bigger than what you can put in the box you would have to store it somewhere else. The other con is that you would have to take your pieces out of the box to see what you have planned.

3. The third option for putting your photos in order is a photo album. This is probably the most obvious way of organizing your photos. This way they definitely won't get out of order before you need them in your scrapbook. With this idea you could start your page planning with the little embellishments that won't damage your photos, and you can just flip through and see what you have planned at a glance. The only con I can think of with this idea is that you can't plan with big pieces or can add your background paper, but that is easy to add as you go.

Now that you have your photos organized and in order and possibly some of the planning done you can finish your planning. If you are like me you like to do more than one page at a time, so I will take a day and plan and cut out pieces and do what I can to be organized.

1. The first idea I have for you, you will need a big cork memo board that is huge on the wall or propped against the wall in a place that you can see/get to easily from your work space. You will also need string or ribbon (ribbon will make your planning into a pretty display); push pins to attach the ribbon, and clothes pins (make sure they are not too strong, or they will leave marks on your photos and pieces). To make this planning station you will need to cut your string/ribbon to go across the length of the board. Next you will need to clip the clothes pins to the string/ribbon (it will be easier to do this step before you attach the string/ribbon on the board). Then you need to attach the string/ribbon to the board using the push pins, making sure to stretch it tight across the board. Now all you have to do is pin your pieces, photos and paper up and you will have a bird’s eye view of your planning.

2. The second idea is to have a spare 12 by 12 album with the pocket page protectors in and add your paper, photos and pieces to it. This way you can see how your paper, photos and pieces coordinate before you put it together, and you won't have as much to clean up later.

Once you have you pages planned, you are ready to put them together! I hope you enjoyed these ideas!
