Scrubs-can't They Be For Everyone?

The medical field was the first to introduce the notion of scrubs. What a funny word for attire. But there was a method to the madness in naming these surgical outfits’ medical scrubs. With the advent of discovering that germs could cause rampant infection when introduced to a sterile environment such as an operating room, changes became necessary to thwart sterile field compromise. Doctors and nurses would start the procedure of 'scrubbing in', or clinically cleansing their hands and arms so as not to bring in germs to the operating room environment. Instead of wearing everyday clothes, they began to wear durable outfits made of cotton to make sure outside contaminates would not be brought in with them. So, what better name to use than scrubs when scrubbing?

Fast forward to the new millennium. Not only do hospital personnel wear scrub uniforms, but the donning of these not so fancy outfits have crossed over into many different areas. Designer scrubs have become the fashion of the day. Color, design, durability and popularity have made wearing nursing scrubs and medical scrubs the chic uniform of the day. Say goodbye to the old nursing uniforms and say hello to color, comfort and style. Gone are the days of wearing restricted clothing when working in an environment that calls for bending, stretching and standing for long hours. Furthermore, why wear drab material when everyone can dress 'happy' by wearing colorful and patterned scrubs uniforms? Most scrubs have a v neckline for comfort and ease of wear. Pockets have been placed on the top left breast and the bottoms have them on the sides and sometimes in the back. They come in a wide variety of colors; almost any color imaginable along with bright prints and backgrounds. If you want to share yourself with others, some companies even have the capability of printing photographs on the pocket of the scrubs top.

When visiting the doctor, dentist or veterinarian, seeing the staff dressed in professional scrubs uniforms gives a sense of confidence needed for patients. It also helps to identify personnel especially when in a bigger practice or hospital. Quite often even the receptionists will wear these scrubs so they too can be considered part of the team. What is really nice about wearing scrubs is that they are so comfortable and easy to take care of. The ease of choosing an outfit is remarkable as it usually only comes down to color. Even then some hospitals and practices have a specific color with a logo printed on the top to make their team stand out and stand together. The sky is the limit for choice and color if no demands are put on that criterion. A really nice attribute of getting to wear scrub uniforms to work is that an extra pair can be kept on hand in case of an unsightly mess in the lab, operating room or even the lunch room. It is as easy as pie to shuck one pair and put on another in no time at all. Maybe all industries should look into wearing scrubs. How convenient would that be for all of us?
