Do you remember when search engine information was about to be invaded by Homeland Security? Many online regulars were very concerned that their personal information would be freely extracted from the search engines and handed over to government. While we understand the extremely challenging job government security agencies perform, there are limits. Under the guise of trying to root out terrorist sleeper cells, Homeland Security would have gotten so much more from the search engines than what they even hoped for. Feeling very confident of success, they approached the major companies for search engine access. It was at this time that internet users began to feel like someone was watching over their shoulder. Search engines are used for research 24/7. Internet users began to brace themselves for a stand off. With September 11 never far from anyone’s mind, some were very accommodating in giving government what they asked for. It’s always a delicate balancing act. The liberties, rights and privacy that Americans have fought so hard for, should never be given up so readily. Some hunkered down for the long haul. The battle lines were beginning to take shape. The various search engine companies began to show what they are made of. Some buckled without the slightest hint of pressure. They were setting up to deliver the goods without so much as a whimper. However, in the face of mounting pressure, Google stood firm. Their resistance to the pending invasion of privacy of their customers was going to be met with the full weight of Google’s considerable resources. In the face of other search engines capitulating, Google never buckled nor wavered. Their stance was indeed admirable. Google has long stood behind customer privacy. At a time when we are invaded by so much form and fashion, it’s nice to know that a big firm like Google has substance.
