Search Engine Ranking

Back in the old days, when search engines were just starting out, the title of the page was the only necessary tool to have your site found and ranked. For example, if this page was titled “Jakes marvelous big buns, New York” it would give high ranking for bakeries and buns in New York.

Well, that was the past. Nowadays, there are many tricks used by people to get ranking even when they don’t fit into the same business. Let’s illustrate an example:

Imagine you are a bakery – Jakes Bakery in New York. Your site uses the slogan “Marvelous big buns in New York”. In the past potential and existing customers could put in your title or slogan and you would be number one in the search engine.

Nowadays, it isn’t always the case. The customer putting in the same title might end up in a pornography site. Why? The slogan “Big Buns” might be their way of attracting more visitors to their site. Even though it has no relationship to the business.

So, the search engines got smarter. Then the engines started using the page description, and meta-tags on each page to help rank. And what happened? Jake got back up in the ranking…

But again, not for long. The same offensive sites used the same tricks. Then the engines started using robotic analysis of alt tags on images, and text content. And Jake got back up in the ranking…

But again, not for long. The same offensive sites used the same tricks – even putting in white text on white background just to rank!

Nowadays, the engines use a human element to eliminate the obvious abusers. Nevertheless, it is tough to compete. And to know the rules.
