Securing Your Home
There are five areas of your home which need fortifying to secure your home. First there is the roof. The roof is one of the weakest points of your home. We have all lost shingles in the midst of a major heavy rain storm before. Shingles are not meant to withstand strong hurricane force winds. Shingles are adhered to your roof in most cases with adhesive which either doesn't work or over time weakens itself. Every so often you want to head up to the roof and use new fresh adhesive. In most cases it is said to use wood adhesive as that will lock the shingles to the roof the best. This is the act of refitting your shingles. The second thing you should look into securing is the straps which connect your roof to any of the walls of your home. These straps simply need a little reinforcement. They should already be interlocked correctly and securely but a few precisely located steel fasteners wouldn't hurt and can offer your wall connections the extra support they require to stand up against brute force of a severe storm. The third area requiring security is the shutters. Normally shutters are working opening and closing shutters. Other times shutters are simply outer displays that do not open and close and remain open at all times. Usually shutters are tested by the manufacturer for just these occasions so you can easily test to see if your shutters can with stand wind and debris. Lean against your shutter, if it yields easily then your shutter needs a little more reinforcement. If this is the case, contact your shutter's manufacturer in order to see what parts are required to repair your shutters. Securing your doors is also important. You can do this by making sure your doors have a dead bolt and security lock. Leave at least a minimum of an inch at the bottom of your door. Check the connections at both places on the doors and make sure the bolt extends just about an inch from the threshold. Finally make sure your garage doors are secured at their weakest points. This can be easily accomplished with vertical and horizontal braces which can be attached on the inside. Inspecting these areas and securing them will greatly improve your home's security in a storm.
