Seeing The Shot
One of the advantages of golf is that you have time to prepare for playing the shot . Learn to profit from this by seeing and feeling every shot in your mind and body before you play it. Clear vision beforehand promotes confidence in your ability to play from difficult, as well as easy, lies. Positive Approach Seeing and feeling your shot brings mind and body together. First you imagine how the ball will fly through the air to the target, including any roll when the ball lands. Then you transfer that picture in your mind into a feeling the body can understand-and produce the correct movement to hit the desired shot. All great players visualize before hitting a shot. They carefully negotiate every situation within mind and body before making any attempt to play the ball. They know that the concentration needed for golf is different from many other sports. As golf is a stationary ball game, one of your problems is to stay relaxed and composed at address. This is essential if you are to produce the desired flowing movement in your swing. Golf requires a relaxed yet positive approach. By making your muscle movement automatic you can stay in an absorbed frame of mind and concentrate on making a successful shot. Paint a Mental Picture Preparing correctly to play a shot means painting a picture of the ball’s path in your mind. Simply imagine the flight of the ball through the air and its roll on landing, allowing for wind and terrain. Leave out of your picture any hazards such as bunkers that are positioned between you and your intended target. Muscle Memory Before you take your stance, create in your mind a clear picture of precisely how you want the ball to travel through the air and roll on landing. Remember that factors such as wind, ground conditions and how you feel on the day affect every stroke. Rub out negative factors such as hazards between you and the target. They cause nervousness and uncertainty, which destroy an otherwise good swing. When you have a crystal-clear mental image, you need to transfer it to a feeling within your body. Do it by taking two or three practice swings that imitate the action you’ll use to hit the desired shot. This routine teaches your body muscle memory. You give it a thorough rehearsal of the shot so that the muscles are not taken by surprise when it matters. You swing smoothly and naturally your mind is free to concentrate on positive thoughts while your swing takes care of itself. Make It Physical With the image of the ball’s flight in your mind, transfer the picture into the physical movement required to make your swing. Take a few practice swings as if you are playing the shot itself. Try to achieve muscle memory even when on the practice tee until it becomes an automatic and positive aspect of your game. Regular Practice Now you can address the ball and play the shot by repeating the feeling of your practice swings. Most of the top players go through this routine on the practice tee as well as on the course. Regular practice is the best way to improve mental pictures of your golf shots, in time, positive thought and feeling become as automatic as other activities of everyday life.
