Self Discovery - Step Back And Relax

We live in an age of self-discovery. Some would even say that there is a global awakening when it comes to thinking more of the well being of others, less of self, and focusing on then many unresolved issues for the wellness of the planet and all of mankind. Reminders that seem to plague us at every turn of a page, radio and television broadcast news.

We are told we need to focus on our lives more, meditate, pray, and envision a better future as some sort of global consciousness. Those of us in the western world are reminded how wasteful and ruthless we can be when it comes to creating whatever means is necessary to maintain our current lifestyles and often gluttonous attitudes of materialism, even when acknowledging the needs of those less fortunate around the planet.

All of us know how frustrating it is to procrastinate and waste time in the day-to-day scheme of things. I certainly hear about this sort of thing more than most people, because as a professional coach, I help people on a daily basis to get control in their lives again and get the most out of their time.

But in my opinion, a true waste of time does not involve failing to stick to a routine or schedule. It involves failing to adequately learn from the lessons provided to us on a daily basis in the classroom of life. And if we do not learn from these lessons, you tend to find them re appearing wearing different clothes, again and again.

Muhammad Ali once said, "The man who views the world at fifty the same as he did at twenty has wasted thirty years of his life."

Read the quote again if you have to, because it will get you thinking.

Basically what Ali was talking about here was about experience. Generally, the longer we are on this earth, the more we are going to experience and ultimately learn.

Remember, self-discovery is a process of learning that draws upon both good and bad experiences. The longer we're on earth, the more experiences we're going to have.

Of course, this is a general rule. After all, there are people who at age twenty have gone through more than somebody aged fifty with a very sheltered life.

So next time you have a birthday or just are marking days off the calendar, instead of getting all hung up, appreciate the fact that you have another year of wisdom under your belt. You know yourself a little bit better and same time next year, you will know yourself even more!
