Self Development Training

Let’s consider the likes of the big supermarkets in this country, which have been criticised recently over the issue of food miles. By importing foodstuffs from all around the globe, they are – so the argument goes – plunging us deeper into the climate change crisis, because every mile that food is carried equates to a little bit more CO2 that’s pumped into the atmosphere. When you consider that much of this foodstuff is already produced at home in copious quantities, or are “luxuries” that we could live without if we had any environmental conscience, then it becomes very hard to forgive.

But surely the individual has the power to put an end to unnecessary food imports, we are told. All it takes is for enough of us to boycott our local supermarket and return instead to the corner shop, or high street, forcing the top brass to rethink their food supply strategies. In reality that’s about as likely as Gordon Brown enrolling himself on a self-development training course.
The supermarkets may well change their food supply policies, but a few individuals changing their shopping habits are very unlikely to be a major influence on the decision.
Consider also, the issue of road pricing as a means to tackle congestion, whereby you would pay per mile travelled. The government seems committed to the introduction of some kind of road pricing, but must be aware that this might not necessarily be a vote winner at the next election. So you would think that if enough of us registered our opposition to such a scheme, the government would be forced to rethink.

Well over a million people petitioned the government over road pricing, seemingly a huge number of people. But we still find that this idea has not been scrapped; we have instead been informed that a debate will be held in parliament before any solid action is taken, but that some sort of positive action is vital to tackle this rising problem.
A Number 10 spokesman is reported to have commented that “debate in itself does not produce policy” which does not sound encouraging to say the least, whilst the bright spark who thought up the idea of allowing petitions on the government website; as a means of encouraging greater participation in politics was reportedly branded a “prat” by a high ranking member of government.

We are all becoming concerned as individuals, how this current recession will affect our livelihoods; with pay cuts, short time working hours, redundancy and dwindling pension funds becoming the norm. We are also becoming increasingly aware that the traditional ways of generating an income can no longer be relied upon. Maybe right now; there has never been a better time to seek out alternative possibilities, to explore and implement new technologies; a time for self-development training.

On reflection; maybe it has become very difficult for the individual to change or influence the larger picture. But by looking at all of the alternatives and taking control of our own lives, the individual can make a massive difference to the smaller picture
