Selling Jewelry Online And In-store

Anyone who has ever tried selling jewelry will know that finding a buyer who is willing to pay a fair price can be difficult and stressful. It is not uncommon to hear about ruthless buyers who have taken advantage of a seller’s lack of knowledge and need for a sale to drive down the price and purchase the item for a fraction of its true value. Jewelry buyers, like everyone else, are looking for a bargain, and pawn shops, jewelry stores, and mail-in jewelers are often going to try to low-ball a seller to get the best deal they possibly can. It is up to the seller to educate themselves about the true market value of their items and to be equally as ruthless and willing to walk away from a potential sale if they are unable get what they consider to be a fair price.

Getting a fair price when you are selling jewelry is not an easy task. Gold prices fluctuate on a daily basis but continue to increase. Diamond prices tend to remain constant, but often jewelry buyers will suggest that a diamond is less pure than it actually is in order to drive the price down. Precious metals and stones come with multitude of problems when you are selling to pawnshops or jewelry stores, and these problems are multiplied when trying to conduct your sale with an online company.

When selling gold you first need to establish the weight and the karat. Rings will often have an engraving on them to indicate this, but you should still test any gold you have for sale with a gold tester, especially if you are trying to sell a lot of gold products. Gold testers are widely available online and cost less than $100 dollars. They will help you to properly evaluate your items by establishing the weight and the karat.

Diamonds are much harder to test for authenticity. You will need to learn about how to evaluate diamonds properly so you can understand the color and clarity of your jewels and what you should be looking out for in order to establish a price. If you are selling large diamonds of a karat or more, then you should take your diamonds to an independent appraisal expert to get it valued.

For other precious metals and stones, especially platinum and silver, you should monitor the market prices in order to be able to discuss a selling price that is fair. If you are going to be able to negotiate the best deal for your items then, regardless of whether you are selling in store or online, you need to be prepared to walk away from the sale if you are dealing with a jewelry buyer who is unwilling to give you a fair price. The most common error that inexperienced sellers make is being too willing to part with their items for a lower price than they intended to at the start of the negotiations.
