Selling Knowledge Online Pays For Regular Businesses Too

Are commercial businesses missing the boat?
I think so, in fact "the boat" (internet marketing) continues to sail further and further away from bricks and mortar based product and service businesses because they don't realise the fortune to be made in selling knowledge online.

Regular businesses have been brought up on the old model that their knowledge needs to be closely guarded in order to stay ahead of the competition. The current business trend is so concerned about customer connection through twitter and facebook they are forgetting the scope they can create by offering knowledge based products to lists via internet and affiliate marketing. Holding their knowledge too close to their chest has blinded them to the fact that most businesses have a wealth of common industry knowledge - that their competitors would also know, that can be formatted and shared to a willing and waiting world wide audience.

For example what if Starbucks gave away a free e-book on how to make a perfect coffee. It's a no-brainer, information from a trusted source. Now that won't give away any trade secrets and they build a targeted follower list at the same time. But it shouldn't stop there, after all I'm all for capitalism, they could then upsell that list on a subscription, say $5 a month that will give them 10% off coffee.

Keeping it simple let's do the math: Say 20,000 people sign up for the e-book and 6000 sign up for the subscription. So now they have 6000 customers paying them $5 per month = $30,000 per month ($360,000 per year).
Let's say an average coffee costs $2.50 (US) 10 percent off is 0.25. and the customer buys 12 coffees a month (12 x 0.25 = $3.00) So the campaign cost $3.00 x 6000 = $18,000 per month ($216,000 per year). That's a whacking profit of $144,000 per year just for releasing some common industry knowledge backed up by their reputable brand. AND that's assuming that the customer would even buy 12 coffees a month!

So what does your company have to share with the world? Makes looking at hiring an internet marketing specialist a lot more attractive doesn't it!
