Senator Boxer Should Work To Bring The Gitmo Detainees To California
This article does not try to define the problem, or offer solutions. That is for another essay. This article bypasses the solution, and assumes that the detainees will eventually be dealt with on American soil, and I would like to see that to be California soil. As it is now, our California Senators, and Congresswoman Pelosi, have all rejected, out of hand, the idea of bringing the detainees to California, and it makes no sense. Senator Boxer flatly stated,"We only have one max security prison in California and it's, right now, overbooked, that's the case," Boxer told CNN's John King on State of The Union. This is a silly reason not to bring them to California. In a more comprehensive article entitled, We Need the Gitmo Detainees in California, it is made clear that we have an ideal location in the old Federal prison at Alcatraz. The Federal government already owns the property. It is vacant. It would need to be modified, and updated, but, really how much would it REALLY need to be equal to the facilities at Gitmo ? Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi had an even sillier response. In an interview in January, she rejected using Alacatraz, out of hand, because it is currently a tourist attraction ? Does that make any sense ? California would gain alot more tax dollars by housing the Gitmo detainees at Alcatraz, than from the current tourism. Plus, some day, it could be converted back to tourism, and, it would probably make more money than it does now. So, which is more secure ? A prison on an island in the middle of San Francisco Bay, or a prison on the middle of the desert ? I'd say the island is clearly much easier to secure. Gitmo is on an island, and no prisoners have escaped. And, I seriously doubt if it ranks as a 'maximum security prison', so why does Senator Boxer make such a specious argument against bring the detainees to California ? Is Senator Boxer from California ? Or has she been in Washington so long that she was lost touch with her fellow Californians. Maybe she has lost her California identity, and is just another citizen of D.C. I realize that our Senators do have to deal with important issues that reach beyond the interests of their home State, especially when it comes to international concerns. But, domestically, aren't they also supposed to look-out for the best interest their State ? Shouldn't Senator Boxer, and Senator Feinstein, being looking to help California ? Bringing the Gitmo detainees to American soil will bring a ton of money to any municipality that will take them; and, it should be California. Heck, I'd love to have them here, in my little town; it would cure our financial woes for many years to come. And I wish Senators would change their minds, and push to bring the Gitmo detainees to California; goodness knows that we need the money. And that is just my opinion.
