Services Enabling Inter-operability Among Mac And Windows Platform

Mac, the operating system by Apple that is widely recognized for its best services and security features was once the operating system that will run with Apple compatible hardware.

Mac can initially be used to run the software and hardware that is Apple compatible. For such reasons, it was nearly impossible to integrate the Apple networks and Windows Networks. The two operating systems that are most widely used globally miss the mutual integration due to different protocols that they work on, different file structures and systems.

To address these issues, the two companies came with certain improvements and Microsoft, the software king introduced the File Server for Macintosh (FSM) and Print Server for Macintosh (PSM) services with Windows NT Server. These FSM and PSM Macintosh services were also carried forward then with the new releases of operating system and Windows Server. They were also included with Windows 2000 and Windows Server 2003.

With these Microsoft services initiatives, users working on Apple Platform can share the printers and files on a Windows server. The Power Macintosh models can be integrated with windows Server 2003.

To integrate Mac models with Windows networks, the main objectives that are to taken care of are:
• File Integration
• Printing
• And Internet Access using DNS/ DHCP

The products that offer inter-operability among Apple Macintosh platform and Windows operating systems are:
• Windows Server 2003 Services for Macintosh: This includes three components that provide server end interoperability services to enable Windows based clients and Macintosh clients to share files and printer resources. The three components of Windows Server 2003 Services for Macintosh are:
o AppleTalk Phase 2 Protocol Suite- network protocols that are generally used in AppleTalk network architecture
o File Server for Macintosh (FSM) service- this enables the users using Macintosh computers to store and share files on servers running Services for Macintosh and includes support for AppleTalk Filing Protocol (AFP)
o Print Server for Macintosh (PSM) service- allowing users to send print commands to the printers that are connected to computers running Windows NT Server; Windows 2000 Server, or the Windows Server 2003 operating system.

• Microsoft Office for Apple Macintosh Operating Systems: The latest Microsoft Office for Apple Macintosh Operating Systems is Microsoft Office v. X for Mac that provides all the programs like Word and Excel to the Mac users. Microsoft Office v. X for Mac enables users to access data and share files over multiple versions of Windows based computers and Macintosh computers.

• Microsoft Internet Applications for Apple Macintosh Computers: Under this, Microsoft offers IE, Outlook 2001, Outlook Express and MSN Messenger for Mac users to support Web browsing, Internet- e-mail and instant messaging.

Installation and configuration of each Mac compatible Windows software, need utmost care and fulfillment of certain pre-requisites.
