Setting The Limits Between Phobia And Fear

Phobia is a stress disorder making people experience episodes of exaggerated anxiety when the fear caused by particular situation, object or being goes beyond the normal limits. Only the thought that a similar situation could occur provokes an abnormal state of fear. When the subconscious finds similarities between stimuli that caused or accompanied a previous episode and stimuli or circumstances that a person suffering from phobia is about to encounter, the state of panic is artificially induced although no real threat exists. Below you will find the main distinctive features of phobia, possible causes and how phobic symptoms manifest.

*stress and traumatic experiences

Phobia is closely related to a traumatic episode when the brain associated causative and circumstantial elements with the feeling of overwhelming fear. The mot common symptom is hyperventilation, a reaction of self-defense for all human beings.

*gradual augmentation of the phobic fear

Each time an individual suffering from a form of phobia is exposed to a new phobic experience, the feeling of fear is reactivated and intensified. This way phobia becomes more severe and the feeling of fear totally uncontrollable.

*subconscious avoidance of menacing elements

Phobia takes full control of the subconscious, therefore, the sufferer is aware that his reaction to particular stimuli is exaggerated and people around him do not understand the fear, he still makes everything possible to avoid everything related or might expose him to new phobic episodes.

Types of phobia are extremely diversified as human mind might react in an endless array of possibilities, however, many people commonly get confronted with claustrophobia, acrophobia and agoraphobia.
