Seven Tips For Cutting Down On Spam

Tired of wading through spam every time you check your mail? You’re not alone. Every day, millions of people receive large volumes of unwanted and even fraudulent emails. Here are a few things you can do about it.

Don’t reply to spam emails. Some spam emails contain a link for you to click on if you want to opt out. Some spammers simply use this link to determine whether or not they have a live address.

If you must give out an email, use a separate address. Sometimes you can’t avoid giving out an email address. If you must do this, use an address separate from your main email.

Report fraud to the authorities. If you believe someone is trying to defraud you over email, send a copy to the National Fraud Information Center [http://www.fraud.org/].

Write out your email address. Always write out your email address when posting it online: instead of “yourname@yoursite.com,” use “yourname at yoursite.com.”

Opt out. Email marketing best practices require customers to make a conscious choice to opt in. But some companies still opt you in as the default, and require you to opt out.

Read the fine print. It’s worth reading through the privacy policy on a website before giving up your contact information.

Use an email filter. They won’t catch everything, but they will lessen the volume of your emails.

Spam can be more than a nuisance. With these tips, you can cut down on the amount of spam you receive.
