Sexual Undertones And Disney Cartoons, A Contradiction In Terms

Disney, a name synonymous to animation and theme parks is also known for movies that have a family oriented content. Nevertheless, it appears that the brand and the company are not immune from intrigues and accusations to the contrary. There have been claims that some of its animated features contain subliminal sexual messages, undeniably a stain on the wholesome Disney image.

Apparent proof to such allegations are said to be found in The Lion King, The Little Mermaid and Who Framed Roger Rabbit. However a close look at these cited works are inconclusive and are highly subjective to the interpretation of the beholder. For instance, the despondent Simba slumps on the ground and by so doing triggers dust to form in the air. Most viewers will focus on the lion as he sorts out his emotions but the movement of the particles against the starry night sky will lead discerning eyes to a seeming formation of letters. The scene is fleeting but if repeatedly observed will indeed arrange into letters that appear to spell s-e-x. However it is also likely that it forms s-f-x to stand for the special effects team behind the production.

Meanwhile the scene in The Little Mermaid, the other feature that is subject to scrutiny, is during Eric and Vanessa's wedding. The officiating bishop is being faulted for displaying an erection during the ceremony. However when the same scene is viewed from a different angle, it is quite possible that what is assumed to be an erectile tissue is actually one of his protruding knees.

Another case in point is Jessica Rabbit's car sequence which supposedly reveals her private parts as her dress sneaks up when she loses her balance. Again the scene flashes quickly and may also be subject to speculation. Is it indeed what it appears to be or is it simply a shadowed area? Admittedly the storyline and the disney characters of this feature attracts more mature audiences but would Disney really subject its movies to such insinuating messages?

Assuming that there are indeed subliminal messages in Disney movies, one would be inclined to question what merit these would serve. Is it done discriminately to increase sales or sensationalize the material? If so, what for, when Disney is already the leading icon in the animation field? What good will it serve jeopardizing the image and the following it has built for more than seven decades?

If it does not make sense or goes against logic, then perhaps these supposed images are conjured by the overactive imagination of a few. There are Hidden Mickey's inserted in movie and TV animations as a subtle representation of Mickey Mouse, but deliberately hidden sexual meanings? I doubt. What do you think?
