Shakespeare's Reflections On Obese, Overweight Men
Quote "Let me have men about me that are fat; Sleek-headed men and such as sleep o'nights; Yond Cassius has a lean and hungry look; He thinks too much, such men are dangerous." Unquote
Caesar, an excerpt from "Julius Caesar"
William Shakespeare 1564-1616
You are unquestionably informed of the decided outcome of that yarn as pertains to "sleek-headed men, with lean and hungry looks"? Sleek and lean men as opposed to overweight, obese and fat men!
I dont know of any substantiated proof that "sleek-headed men, with lean and hungry looks", are any additionally hazardess than plump or obese men?
However; in William Shakespeare's time, he would have amassed some worldly knowledge to that deed, to have written the statement in his acclaimed play;
"Julius Caesar".
What are your thoughts about William's quote when applied to the 21st Century?
My thoughts are that Caesar would feel out of harm's way in one of the developed societies in the year 2008! Why? Because he could be largely (pun not intended) be surrounded by portly men, who would never be considered as possessing a "lean and hungry look"! In point of fact a man or woman projecting a "lean and hungry look" in modern society is speedily turning into a minority "crowd". In additon the way the developed nations are heading with excessive
food consumption and severely under exercising.......not looking healthy whatsoever!
Last night I attended our local shopping center for a spot of late evening shopping. The time was about 6 PM. I found a table in my special coffee bar to
order and enjoy a flat white coffee...with skim milk naturally! The crowds rushed past. After ten or so minutes, I noticed myself subconsciously counting the quantity of slightly tubby, to obese passersby strolling along with shopping baskets stuffed with with packages of heavily processed looking junk food! Tragically, they massively out-numbered the "lean and hungry looking
people"!
Many trolley trundlers had their children following the trolleys. I
also observed that well over the average amount of passing young children also were extremely well (over?) fed...or is that extremely chubby! Most parents were equally well padded with excess fat in all body parts.
Examining the coffee drinkers surrounding my table, and again I was
amazed at the unnaceptable quantity of chubby men, women and kids in such a small coffee shop! The amazing thing was that a lot were tucking into big creamy coffees, to help wash down scrumptiously, sweet, mouth
watering, tempting cakes; consumed with a humungous serving of cream on the side!
I thought I might appear as if I could not outlay the money to also enjoy such taste delectables. I was one of the few coffee sippers not howing down large
quantities of carbohydrates, and a large load of supersaturated fats; I am sure
you get the picture. All those delicious delights that convert skinny men, women and children into big, chubby and eventually "overweight" humans.
Please note, the point I am attempting to make is that this was at 6 PM! Many of these obese men, women and young children were happily chucking down some "deadly" looking junk food at a time when, obviously, these parents and children needed to have been at home serving their little "chubby" children some of the must have "five vegies with fish". Not tucking into junk food in a cafe assisting
their offspring into premature heart attacks, strokes, sugar diabetes two, any number of cancers and for a lot; into the modern epidemic of "childhood
obesity"!
The message I send to these apparently fast food hungry parents is this. Think seriouslyabout the future health and well being of your kids. Cook and serve the little children a healthy and nutricious evening meal. Parents are responsible for the health and well being of your offspring...no-one else. Substituting probably
your child's most important and perhaps their one and only proper food intake for the day with take away or eat in junk food is hardly being a responsible adult. And for sure, certainly not at 6 PM on a Thursday night!
