Sherman College Of Chiropractic

Sherman College of Chiropractic offers a comprehensive educational program that leads to a Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.) degree. Sherman is one of 18 chiropractic colleges in the U.S., and the only one in the Carolinas. The college is located in the Spartanburg, South Carolina area.

The private chiropractic college was founded in 1973 by Dr. Thom Gelardi. It was named for Dr. Lyle Sherman, a pioneer in the development of modern chiropractic and an assistant director of the Palmer Chiropractic Research Clinic. The first class graduated in 1976. The word chiropractic is derived from two Greek words meaning “done by hand”. Chiropractic is based on the premise that recuperative powers of the body are integrated through the nervous system. Misaligned vertebrae in the spinal cord interfere with the body’s ability to heal. Chiropractic analyzes the spinal misalignments and corrects them through adjustments.

The enrollment at Sherman College of Chiropractic is approximately 200 students. A prerequisite for acceptance into the program is the completion of a minimum of 90 semesters of college credit applicable to a baccalaureate degree. Some states do require a baccalaureate degree be earned before beginning a chiropractic program. Prospective student should verify this with their state licensing board. The chiropractic program at Sherman consists of 14 quarters of study including anatomy, physiology, chemistry, radiology, and chiropractic technique. The program includes a two year internship at the school’s health center. The average class size is 25 students, but lab and technique classes are smaller. This ensures that students get the individual attention they need from the instructors.

The 80 acre campus includes a Chiropractic Health Center that is open to the public. The Health Center is a teaching clinic that allows students in their final stage of internship to treat patients under the supervision of licensed chiropractic doctors. The clinic has 23 treatment rooms and offers digital x-ray services to patients. Over 30,000 patient visits a year are made to the facility. Prices are very affordable. Patients pay $15 per visit. Seniors and students pay only $10 per visit. Appointments may be made Monday through Thursday from noon to 7pm. Friday hours are noon to 6pm. The college regularly offers spinal checks and health talks at local events and health fairs.

As the demand for chiropractic continues to grow, Sherman College of Chiropractic strives to provide well qualified chiropractic professionals. The college is located just north of Spartanburg at 2020 Springfield Road in Boiling Springs, South Carolina.
