Most people don't know that some of the first travel souvenirs were seashells. Sea captains were the collectors who brought the shells back from exotic locales. When they returned home, the shells had a place of honor in curio cabinets, or entire rooms (called wonder chambers) that were completely devoted to displaying the collections. People have often applied the value of the souvenir to the person who collected the souvenir. That's one of the best reasons to purchase souvenirs that are actually native to a specific area. Often there are objects that have been created to look like native objects but have been made elsewhere, and are not the best choice of souvenirs if you have a valuable collection to start with. Take for instance one of the most common souvenirs: snow globes. In just about every location you can imagine - from souvenir shops to airports - these globes can be purchased. Certainly snow globes have their own long tradition, but they aren't as good as a serious souvenir that presents the place to which you are traveling, or have traveled. If you take a trip to Tampa, Florida, I would suggest purchasing items like an antique cigar box or a label taken from a historic orange crate, not a snow globe filled with oranges or other citrus fruit. Or, you could buy ephemera art that tells a wonderful story about Florida's past and the various cultures that make up the state. Try to buy the highest quality items on your trip that your finances allow. Try to get souvenirs that remind you of the culture and history of the area. Keep in mind that when traveling, negotiation is always a consideration. As an example, let's think of the opportunity to visit the historical city of St. Petersburg in Russia. You have your heart set on a Russian nesting doll matroyshka as the perfect keepsake. But with so many nesting dolls to select from, it then becomes a matter of trying to figure out which ones suit you the best. There are endless variations on the nesting doll, but many are mass produced. When inspecting the matroyshkas, try to find the artist's signature on the bottom, a hand-painted appearance, and a varnished surface. You want a doll that has even coloring, a complementary color scheme, gold leaf or ornate gilt, identical scenes depicting snow scenes, historic buildings or locations, Russian ladies, or some other scene, on every nested doll's midsection. All of these factors are the true keys to the value of the piece. When considering the type of souvenir to purchase, think about how you'll feel when you've returned from your travels, and imagine the type of object you'd like to have in your home to remind you of your holiday memories. What have you discovered about your travel destination that you did not know before? It's possible that you're choosing an item which can appreciate in value and prove to be even more significant than you realize. Shopping for souvenirs is one of the ways to make a connection with other cultures and be able to bring a piece of that far away world back home with you. And if you have thought ahead, you will have packed light so you will have room to bring back your mementos. Bear in mind that weather can be inconsistent, so prepare for different conditions. So, if you're vacationing on a beach, you will still want some warm clothing in case the nights are cold, or you're in a building that is air conditioned. It's also wise to take clothes which you can easily wash and re-wear. Remember those comfortable walking shoes. Make sure you consider what your clothes say about you. Pickpockets try to pick the tourist out of the crowd and your clothes can easily give you away. If your luggage is lost, an all-too-common occurrence, it may take several days for it to be found.
