Shopping For The Baby Who Has Everything: Tips For Buying Baby Shower Gifts

Shopping for the baby that has everything? If procrastination is your motto, chances are you wait till the last minute to shop for anything, including a baby shower. Waiting until the last minute to buy those gifts can often leave you with a registry that is picked over. Here are some great gift ideas that won’t be on the registry but that every mother-to-be will love.

  • Saving Bonds: If you’re running low on time and are tempted to just buy a card and stick a crisp one hundred dollar bill in it, a savings bond may be a better option. Not only does this appear to be little more thoughtful than just running to Hallmark and the ATM, but it ensures that one day, after the bond and the baby matures, it can go to something useful like college tuition or books.

  • Clothing: Clothing for an infant is always a useful gift. Babies can take a toll on clothing so you can never have too much. When purchasing clothing for babies, it is a good idea to buy things a little bigger. Buying something in 9 to 12 months size will ensure that your purchase will fit a bigger baby or will add to their future wardrobe a couple months in advance.

It’s better to buy a bigger outfit and have room for the baby to grow than to buy just right and only get one wear out of it. If the gender of the baby is not known at the time of the purchase, it’s a good idea to stick with neutral colors like yellows and greens.

  • Gift Certificates: If you’re really stumped on what to buy and need to find something fast, a gift certificate to a store that specializes in baby gear, or one that offers a decent selection of baby items is always a safe bet. Buying a gift certificate will allow the parents to pick up anything that wasn’t received at the shower or things that they will need later on after the baby is born.

  • The Essentials: All the basics that a baby needs can be quite pricey. Buy a basket or hamper and fill it with things like pacifiers, diapers, onesies, bottles, and bibs. Dress it up a little with a cute stuffed animal or a toy for baby. All of those things will be useful in the months to come after the baby is born including the basket or hamper.

  • Keepsakes: Another great idea is purchasing things like silver frames, rattles, cups, and other novelty items that can be engraved with the baby’s name, or a little message from you. These gifts may not be useful for everyday, but they contain sentimental value that will be carried on for years to come.

Make sure you check with the store you’re purchasing them from to make sure they can have it ready by the time you need it. Most places can do the engraving the same day and have it ready in a few hours.

  • Books: Although the baby won’t be sitting down and reading novels any times soon, a classic book like Grimm’s Fairytales can be a great gift. Make a little basket full of all those must have storybooks for every little girl or boy, that way mom and dad can read to them until their old enough to read to themselves.
