In the fast moving world of technology, you will often find retailers reducing costs to sell the most popular technology devices, so why should you want to pay more?
The simple answer is added features. Not just features that you never use, but ones that are useful.
The low end Sat Nav market has a number of products that will get you reliably from A to Z, and some even have the option to add traffic reports and speed camera detection, but at an added regular subscription cost.
Whilst your initial thoughts may be to spend as little as possible, you should look at the features available on higher end models. You will usually get the same navigation functionality as on the basic models, often with enhanced usability such as voice recognition controls, an MP3 player or Bluetooth connectivity with your mobile to provide hands free calling.
So in one machine you get a combination of devices.
As an example, The Tom Tom GO 940 Live is currently the top of the range Tom Tom and includes an over the air update service and Google search, that allows you to search fuel prices and navigate to the cheapest. You can also search for businesses through Google, get directions and call them on the fully featured hands free kit.
The price is about twice the price of the more basic models, but you get a larger screen, an MP3 player that will stream music to your car radio from the built in FM transmitter, and road safety alerts.
Probably most useful for drivers who are in their car a lot, covering a lot of miles and who need a reliable device to cope with navigation, hands free communication and need the other features, it is certainly worth looking beyond the cheapest Sat Nav devices and weighing up if you should pay more to get more features.
